GOLIATH

Goliath. Goliath stands for what seems impossible. I hope you understand what I said. What “seems” impossible, not what “is” impossible. Although something seems impossible, it doesn’t mean it is. We may be familiar with the story of Goliath in the Bible. In 1 Samuel 17, we come to hear of Goliath for the first time. He was a Philistine champion from Gath and verse 4-10 gives us a clear and vivid description of this giant man, his weapons, his confidence, everything that was valid for us to picture who Goliath was. Goliath, even though he was a champion warrior, he was also very good at one thing, defying God and scaring the people of Israel including their king, Saul.
I don’t blame them. These people were warriors, they have been to many wars and defeated many, but this time, they experienced something different. A giant. Someone that physically looked impossible to defeat. Of course you automatically enter “this is impossible mode”. There are many systems in this world that set us to that mode. You see it and you just say “yeah that’s impossible”. They stop us from seeing beyond the problem. It becomes a challenging obstacle and it is frightening. That medical report where the doctor says “unfortunately, you have a few days to live”. How can one see beyond that kind of Goliath? “Sorry my report says your womb cannot carry children?” “I’m sad to tell you, you cannot walk again”.
There are the normal kind of problems and the Goliath kind of problems and I know you understand what I mean. You can have the normal kind of problem like “this headache needs painkillers” and the Goliath problem like “this headache is caused by a tumour in your brain and it cannot be removed without killing you”. That is what the Israelites were facing, the Goliath kind. But I am here to let you know that the Bible says “Nothing is too hard for the Lord!” (Jeremiah 32:17). The Israelites knew they couldn’t do this because what Goliath does to you is he creates fear to set in, causing you to forget about Him that created the world His Word.
So what God did was He brought David who was for the first time seeing this Goliath man. And upon seeing him he probably thought “hold on, are you guys really scared or you are playing?” The thing is that David had not been in that environment from the beginning and the wind of fear hadn’t caught him yet. When problems come, fear comes and when you are in that environment when that wind blows, it’s easier to capture you too. Only a few are able to cover their nose in that time and refuse to inhale that fear. But unfortunately most of us are captured when that wind blows. But what God does is He sends someone who comes in to set you free from that fear!
David comes in and says you guys see Goliath but I see “Go (LIAR) th”. Goliath liesssss! How dare him stand before the Lord’s people and defy them and God thinking God will just let that pass. Don’t get me wrong, Goliath is strong, he’s big, I mean he’s a champion warrior, come on. But God is God! The creator of everything in the world including Goliath! Of course the only thing that can defeat him is God. Today we stand as David in our own story and we say “Listen Goliath, our God rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to me!” (1 Samuel 17:47 personalised). We only fail because we forget that this battle was never ours from the beginning. It has always been the Lord’s and when you try to fight the Lord’s battle, you will fail.
The Goliath that stands before us, which is stopping you from moving forward, the Goliath which takes you back ten times with each progress you make, the Goliath that has become a problem causing us not to see the future, causing us to fear the future instead of having joy towards it, today as you read this, you join your faith with mine and we say “Goliath, I’m not doing this with you! God is about to bring you down and He will do it by using me. Yes I look young, yes I look small, yes I look incapable and incompetent, yes you are bigger, you are stronger, but you can never defeat God”. Father Lord, as we read this today, we have come to understand that there are systems bigger than us, that seems impossible to us, that is just tormenting our lives, and yes, we may have given up, but today we have a new mindset, we have escaped from this fear that imprisoned us and we go into the world to defeat these Goliaths with the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, so help us God. We will be conquerors in Jesus’ name, amen!
May God bless you and we will be back God willing next week. Have a fruitful rest of your week.
