Should we question God if we trust Him?

"YOU ALONE KNOW "

Let’s dive all the way back to the Old Testament, the book of Ezekiel and chapter 37. Many of us may be aware of this story, and some not. The first part of this chapter talks about how the hand of the Lord came upon Ezekiel and he was brought out by the Spirit of the Lord and was set in the middle of a valley which was full of bones. He was led back and forth among them, and he saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. So he was asked, Son of man, can these bones live? Then Ezekiel said, Sovereign Lord, you alone know. Then he was told to Prophesy to the bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ So Ezekiel prophesied as he was commanded. (Ezekiel‬ ‭37‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

“You alone know”.

I love this Bible story because it highlights so many things, but the key thing we’ll focus on today is “You alone know”. Have you ever been asked a question where you answered with a question? And have you ever answered with a question in a way that made the person who asked the question feel stupid for asking? Let’s do a demo:

The Spirit: “Ezekiel, can these bones live?”

Ezekiel: “How can these bones live?”

In fact, Ezekiel would ask, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

But his response was “You alone know”. This is because he first knew who He was dealing with. Verse one says, The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord…, so firstly, he knew this was the Lord he was dwelling with here. And it also shows that he knew that God is the only One with knowledge about everything. He was wise to throw it back. But what he didn’t do was question God because he had an understanding of what He can do. And the other part I love is the latter verse when he was told to speak to the bones and he did that without questioning the instructions. Now, I want us to think of this. If we say we believe in God, then why do we ask Him questions when He tells us to do something? If He alone knows, then why are you questioning it?

Before Adam and Eve ate the fruit, there were no recorded questions. God gave His command clearly: “You must not eat from the tree...” and there was no debate, no uncertainty, and no questioning. The fruit itself had not even been touched. Then the first question mark was introduced in the Bible, which came from the serpent. Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬). Read Genesis 1 and 2, there were no questions. So it got me thinking, if we say we trust God, then why question Him? Remember, He alone knows, so does it mean we doubt when we ask?

There’s a level of trust I want to reach where I don’t need to ask any questions. Not because asking is wrong, but because if only God knows, then I can trust that His plans won’t make me fail or destroy me.

I’m not saying we should never ask. What I’m trying to point out is this: should understanding always come before obedience? I often tell myself, “You need to understand before you do.” But with God, that cannot always be the case. Faith doesn’t come by understanding. Trust doesn’t come by understanding. Even hope, many times, doesn’t come by understanding. Maybe the issue is not whether we ask questions, but how we ask them. Questions born from a desire to understand God more deeply can be an expression of faith and humility. Some questions draw us toward God, while others tempt us away from trusting Him. The serpent's question was not a sincere search for truth; it was designed to create suspicion about God's word.

Today's blog is simply a question for us to think about: If we believe in the only One who truly knows, should we still ask? Well, I can't answer that for you. I encourage you to think about it for a moment, and may God give us the wisdom to seek Him, the humility to trust Him, and the faith to follow Him even when we don't understand everything.
